According to some recent reports all the five cellular mobile operating companies in Pakistan namely Mobilink, Jazz, Warid, Telenor and Zong have signed a memorandum of understanding with PTA on infrastructure sharing.

Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has signed this memorandum of understanding with all the Cellular Mobile Operators (CMO’s) because it wants to increase the overall industry lease ration to a specific mark and to increase the pace of infrastructure sharing among all the cell phone operators in the country. All the parties associated to this MoU expect it to bring various benefits for the telecom industry, for the customers and for the cellular companies as well.

All the CMO’s have agreed to follow a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the technical and commercial consideration. PTA, within its jurisdictions will facilitate the whole process of infrastructure sharing. According to the MoU all the telecom industry players in Pakistan are hoped to make commercial arrangements powerful and increase the overall industry lease ration to 1.5 within the next 3 years with untiring collective efforts.

Well it really looks interesting that all the cellular mobile operators of Pakistan have come to a single platform to support the industry. I wonder if they all can also join hands together to bring 3G network services in Pakistan. If it happens then the telecom industry of Pakistan will definitely reach new height. But so far it looks like nothing such is going to happen because the cost of the 3G spectrum is really high and the cellular mobile operating companies fear that they won’t be able to recover their investment. Whatever the reason is the truth is that the Pakistani mobile phone users are still waiting for the 3G services.

Cell phones have started replacing laptops and video games as more and more people have started playing games on their mobile phones and they use internet on their mobile phones as well. Where ordinary users of mobile phones have reduced the use of desktop computer and laptops there the business persons have also shown an inclination towards the mobile phones. Blackberry stands among the businesspersons as the most favorite business phone.

We all know that people involved in different businesses have to travel a lot. And what is important for them is to keep all their important data with them and stay connected to important business clients through calls and emails. A recent analysis showed that the business persons who have a Blackberry with them do not care about carrying a laptop while traveling. Why they do so? A simple answer to it is that Blackberry has become a single platform for them to conduct all their business activities.

Let us see what features of a Blackberry phone are attractive for a businessman. The first and the most interesting feature in a Blackberry for the business persons is the advanced wireless technology which provides them the email facility with high security. The push email facility and high security provided is really impressive as it securely integrates with Microsoft® Exchange or IBM Lotus® Domino™. Triple DES or AES encryption provides secure communication. This feature has really become famous for sending mails and traveling data. Apart from this Blackberry is liked by them because it saves a lot of time. They can easily access their e-mails, calls, time sensitive information, intranet-based applications and software development tools.

Blackberry has international acceptance and its services work almost all around the world. The users of blackberry mobile phones can access information much faster than the tradition USB as it is Intel processor and blue tooth enabled. Apart from all this Blackberry phones have excellent storage capacity and great standby life of up to 17 days. Blackberry is surely something amazing for the business people.

Almost every mobile phone now has the facility of internet, mp3 player, camera, radio and other such features. People in Pakistan really want to buy cell phones with different features but in Pakistan who uses all the features of a mobile phone? Are they the businessmen who just use internet for browsing emails or are they the middle aged men and women who are so much busy in their daily life that they don’t even get time to hold their mobile phones for the sake of entertainment?

There are a lot of people in Pakistan who buy expensive mobile phones but do not use the mobile phone features completely. Some use it for web browsing others use it for listening songs or radio. Some make calls all day long and some just spend all day sending text messages to others. From housewives to business persons, from laborers to professionals none of them makes the complete use of a mobile phone’s features. The one’s who use a mobile phone optimally are the teenagers and youngsters.

Pakistani youngsters use the mobile phone for receiving phone calls, they text each other all day and stay in touch with friends, they listen to radio at night and listen to music through their mobile phones while traveling, they use their cell phones for browsing internet and chatting online with friends, they are the one to transfer data via Bluetooth with friends and they take fun pictures through the mobile phone camera.

This clearly shows that youngsters and teenagers are the one who use a mobile phone to its complete capability. And they are the one who are always looking for the new features and technology in their mobile phones. They always want something more in their mobile phones. The excitement to buy a new mobile phone is the most among the youngsters in Pakistan. This shows that the true customers to any mobile phone company in Pakistan are the youngsters and the teenagers and every mobile phone company should target them.

People love to stay connected to each other and therefore they have started using the social media networking websites. Through them they stay in touch with almost everyone they know. Social media networking websites have changed the way people communicated to each other. The success of social networking websites in business world and in personal life of people cannot be explained in words.

This success of social networking websites has given rise to a new mobile phone application called “Recognizr”. This unique mobile phone application is made by Swedish software and design company “The Astonishing Tribe” also called TAT.

This mobile application helps to identify the strangers around you. If you have this application installed in your cell phone and you want to know about someone standing in front of you, you only need to take his picture through the software called Recognizr. The software makes a 3-D image of the person and then sends the picture to its database where it gathers the information about the person from all the social media networking website where he has provided his date. The idea is basically generated from the social networking website where people find it difficult to trace people about whom they know nothing. According to recent reports by the researchers this software is capable of gathering the information from the social networking websites in seconds.

This new mobile phone application is wished to attract the teenagers the most as they use the networking sites the most and are always looking for new faces to interact with. This mobile phone application has been criticized a lot as it completely violates the privacy of an individual. Therefore, the application is being held and not yet being launched publicly for further improvement and reexamination.

Some rumors say that TAT is making some changes in this application. These changes will protect the privacy of the people and access to their information through the social media networking websites will only be allowed upon their approval. That might be a good step by TAT but it is assumed that this will reduce the popularity of the new mobile application.

Pakistan stands among the countries where crime rate is really high. The reason for high rate in crime is the economic condition and low enforcement of law and order. Mobile phone snatching stands among the top most crimes in Pakistan. According to an official report more than eighty thousand mobile phones were snatched during the last year. But we all know that the actual number would be way higher than that.

It is not only the responsibility of the Government but it is the responsibility of the nation too in stopping this crime. How can we stop mobile phone snatching in Pakistan? Well you can do it easily by getting your cell phone blocked. When it is blocked all the network providers in Pakistan will blacklist that cell phone. How can you block your mobile phone? You can do it by calling Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), Police or Citizen Police Liaison Committee (CPLC). All you need to do is to make a call, give them the required details along with the unique IMEI number of your handset. The IMEI number could be found at the back of your mobile phone under the battery or on the warrantee card. This number is unique for every mobile phone and the GSM networks use it for the identification of the device. CPLC or PTA will block the mobile phone and it will be of no use for anyone.

People in Pakistan generally don’t do this when their mobile phone is being snatched. They think that they won’t get their mobile phone back by doing so. No doubt they are correct but doing this can reduce the mobile phone snatching rate. Just imagine if everybody starts blocking their stolen mobile phones then the criminals will think that it is useless to steal them.

What we need to do is to see the long term affects of this step. Moreover, a little cooperation is needed from the mobile phone retailer. They should stop illegal unblocking of mobile phones and report to the Police if anybody approaches them to get the handset unblocked.

Nokia on 3rd June 2010 launched a new mobile phone charger powered by the energy generated while riding a bicycle. Nokia has manufactured a charging kit which can be attached to any bicycle and any Nokia mobile phone with a charge jack of 2mm can be charged through it.

Nokia has come up with bicycle powered charger because they view a great demand of it in the whole world. Alex Lambeek the Vice President at Nokia said that “Bicycles are the most widespread means of transport in many markets around the world, so this is just one more benefit to be gained from an activity people are already doing.”

A cyclist will need to travel with a speed of around six kilometers per hour for charging the mobile phone. The charging time will vary depending on the battery model of the Nokia phone. A spokesperson said that 10 minutes of journey at 10kmh will charge a mobile phone up to 28 minutes talk time and 37 hours of standby time. This technology is being derived from the same technology used for front lights in the bicycles. It uses a dynamo to generate electricity from the wheel.

Well this new bicycle powered charger is really going to gather a lot of attraction in countries which are hit by power crisis. People who use their cell phones for staying in contact with their social circle will love this mobile phone charger kit. They can charge the mobile phone and stay fit as well. So, if there is no electricity then no worries get this bicycle powered charger and charge your cell phone.

The price of this cell phone charger will be about $15. And it will be available in the international market by the end of this year.

Do you have an iPhone 3G or any other mobile phone that supports 3G? But if you are in Pakistan then it is of no use because there is no 3G network available. This is really something shocking. The world is now making progressive moves towards 4G technology and telecommunication companies in Pakistan have still not adopted 3G technology.

You might be wondering what 3G technology is. In simple words 3G is International Telecommunication Union (ITU) specification of third generation of mobile communication technology. This technology brings in high bandwidth up to 384 Kbps and 2Mbps in fixed applications. It works over wireless interfaces like GSM, TDMA and CDMA.

PTA, Pakistan Telecommunication Authority has been trying to push the 3G service in the country and have offered 3G spectrum auctions but the telecom industry feels resistant in acquiring this new technology. According to them 3G technology needs huge infrastructure and it has high spectrum acquisition cost. They think that they won’t be able to fulfill the cost of this new technology thus they still rely on 2G technology. Telecom companies in Pakistan say that no doubt there is a huge customer base of mobile phone users in Pakistan but only a few need this technology. Still more than 60% percent of Pakistani population lives is rural areas and they do not use internet at all. If the companies adopt this new technology they will have to face huge losses.

There is nothing wrong with the thinking of telecom companies because they are perfectly right. Nobody wants to bear loss in business. But what about the people of Pakistan will they ever be able to benefit themselves from the 3G mobile network services?

The GoP has to play an important role here. It needs to increase the literacy rate, reduce unemployment and poverty in the economy. This will give confidence to the Telecom industry in Pakistan and they will take bold steps towards adopting the 3G technology.

You like to watch movies on 3D? Everybody does. Most of the movies like fast and the furious, Spiderman and now Avatar become huge hits not only because their story and graphics were cool but because the 3D versions of the movie were a great success. Samsung eyeing this opportunity has decided to launch a mobile phone with 3D display. This will be the fist mobile phone having a 3D display.

If you think that you need glasses to get the 3D view from this mobile phone then you are wrong. You don’t need them. It’s just that you have to place the phone at a certain level and at a certain angle to enjoy the 3D image. Samsung has named this new phone as W960 3D AMLOED. It is a CDMA smart phone with AMOLED display with 3.2 inch capacitive WQVGA resolution (240×400 pixels). It has a 3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus and video recorder functions. Just like other cell phones it has a micro SD card slot, blue tooth and DMB-T TV Tuner.

The 3D display could be easily turned on and off as the phone has an option to do so. It will really be something amazing to use. You can watch movies and you can play 3D games on a mobile phone. Samsung can attract a lot of people through this new technology in its mobile phones but unfortunately this cell phone will only be marketed in South Korea and it is not yet decided when it will come into the international market.

The only rumored drawback in W960 3D AMOLED is that it does not support WiFi. No doubt it is a feature which people really need in a mobile phone and it may pull people away from buying this mobile phone especially those who use WiFi service the most. But still people would be waiting for its arrival in the international market as it is something new for them just like iPhone was once.

If you want to know about the success of mobile phones then you better give a look to U.S market. A recent survey on the use of mobile phones in United States showed that almost 25 percent (one-fourth) of American homes do not have a traditional landline but they have a mobile phone with them.

The survey further showed that there are less than 15 percent households which have a landline telephone but no mobile phones. This clearly identifies that mobile phones are being excessively used in U.S. The survey was carried out by Center for Disease Control also called CDC and it has been tracking these statistics since 2006. In 2006 there were only 11 percent households which had no landlines but a mobile phone. In only 3 years this percentage has hit the mark of 25 percent despite of increase in population of United States.

The report of CDC further showed that there are only 60 percent of households which have a mobile phone and a traditional landline and this number is further expected to show a downward trend. The main reasons behind the declining use of landlines and increasing use of mobile phones in household is that when people move to new homes they do not get the landline phone installed. They use their mobile phones instead to stay in contact with others. Different cell phone contracts, WiFi connectivity and social media networking through the mobile phones are also a major reason of this decline.

I guess we don’t need to ask anyone around the world that which mode they prefer either the traditional landlines or the mobile phones because mobile phone will win the poll easily. Even the households which are using home phone services are now connected through digital signals, cable or satellite providers, or a voice-over IP service. Gone are the days of traditional landline and it is now the era of mobile phones. It is not far when there will be no landline phones and only mobile phones.

According to a recent research by International Telecommunication Union, the number of mobile phone users has reached up to 4 billion.
