The unveiling of Microsoft’s Kin One and Kin Two
A few days back we told you about the upcoming Microsoft’s “its time to share” event. It was rumored that Microsoft would be introducing its Project Pink phones at this event but the spokesperson of Microsoft and Verizon Communication Inc. (partner of Microsoft in this project) declined to give any statements.
In the event “It’s Time to Share” in San Francisco, Microsoft unveiled it two Sidekick/Hiptop concept project pink phones. The two new cell phones “Kin One” and “Kin Two” are not built as smartphone but as “social phone”. By giving it an image of the social cell phone Microsoft wants to target the younger generation and the social media lovers.
Kin One is an oval squarish touch screen slider phone with 4GB internal memory, 5mega pixel camera and full QWERTY keyboard. Whereas Kin Two is a traditional landscape (480 x 320) touch screen slider and it has much better an improved features like 8GB internal memory, 8mega pixel camera capable of 720p video.
Both the Kin phones use a customized Windows OS supported by Zune media players and have Nvidia Tegra processor. They also have a multi touch browser which gives the user a totally different experience. Some of the interesting features of these Kin phones include Kin Loop, Kin Spot and Kin Studio. Kin Loop allows getting the status updates from different social networking website including Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, contacts, e-mails and others which one can name. Kin Spot is a green spot at the bottom of the display. This feature in the Kin phones allows the user to share unlimited photos, videos and web pages with their social network by tapping and dragging the content onto the Kin Spot. The Kin Studio in both the social phones is a personalized web page that automatically backs up all the Kin events, contacts, photos, videos and instant messages.
Although the shape features and the social look of both the phones is really attractive but they do not have expandable memory and App store which means no further apps for the phone. This seems to pull the customers a bit from purchasing these phones. The price of these social phones is yet to be disclosed and both of them will be available in the market by the mid of May. How well they can perform with no App store and expandable memoryis yet to be seen.
